Defining rich

I just finished reading Lois Frankel's Nice Girls Don't Get Rich. In it, she asked people to answer the question, "I would be rich today if I had..." When I first read that sentence, I thought it was asking how we defined richness. (It was actually asking about what mistakes you had made that explain why you are not rich today.)

So to answer it the first way -- how would you define richness -- what would your answer be?

I think for me it would be: I would be rich if I had a house, enough free time to read and write, the ability to travel once or twice a year, and a work space or room of my own. And the house should have a nice kitchen.

I can't think about this topic with hearing "If I Were A Rich Man" from Fiddler On The Roof. While he lists a number of things he would have if he were rich (servants for his wife to direct, a yard full of fowl, and real wooden floors)what he would cherish the most is time to "sit in the synagogue." What that means to me is that time is the ultimate luxury.

I do have a definition I use to determine true wealth. Any one can have "stuff" because you can buy it on credit. But only the wealthy have "staff" because you have to have cash to make payroll.

When you have enough money to pay people to do things for you and it frees you up for nobler pursuits, you are wealthy.

This is on my mind because I just finished cleaning my floors and am wishing I had a housekeeper to do that for me so that I could spend my time writing!

I would have answered it the way you thought of, too. We would be rich if we had a house near the beach that was big enough for family & friends to stay with us...and the time and resources to enjoy it.
