For us, searching for the right sofa has turned into a quest of Holy Grail proportions. I like soft and fluffy; he likes more modern looking couches that can't wrinkle. Basically, I want my couch to look like a giant comforter, but to him, that looks messy. We also have color and material issues; I like reds, he prefers greens, and he can't stand the feeling of felt.
We also need it to have a sofa bed for out-of-town visitors, which narrows down the choices even more, and neither of us like any kind of sofa that looks like it was designed in the 1950s.
We have been searching for about three years now; we went to Macy's again today but found nothing, although Martha Stewart's collection came close (Why the brass dot decoration, Martha??). We'll probably still be using our grad-school era futon in another three years. If you have found the couch of your dreams, please tell me where to look!

We had similar issues and ended up finding a nice compromise at Crate & Barrel. We got a medium gray sectional with a large enough chaise that we didn't need a pull-out bed. It's plenty long/large enough for one guest.
Great, thank you, Noelle!
This sounds so familiar! I have this dilemma in almost every aspect of decorating the house (and lots of other aspects as well). We often end up making compromises that we're both moderately happy with. Long live differences!
ooh ooh! Pottery Barn! I'm partial because I work there, but they have a few sofa sleepers and it might meet you both in the middle. We ended up getting a PB Grand Slipcovered Sofa. Of course, he had very little to do with this decision!
Well, if you are planning on having kids, don't buy anything you aren't willing to see, er, used heavily. I also suggest stain resistant, if not leather, honestly.
:)
I totally understand! To me, buying a sofa is incredibly stressful. Not only do you have to agree on color, texture and style, but you also have this looming sense that you are going to have to look at it every day for many many years. My brother got a really nice grey wool sofa at Ikea that is cozy, but not wrinkly.
