One of my goals this year is to start inventing recipes, instead of just following them. I started tonight with chicken soup -- a classic, but with so many potential variations, there is plenty of room for creativity.
I started with shallots, garlic, olive oil, carrots, celery, chicken stock and shreds leftover roast chicken. Plus salt, pepper, and various spices, including my favorite ingredient, cayenne pepper. If this turns out okay (it's still simmering), then I'll move onto a more adventurous category of food... let me know if you've ever been successful at inventing a dish.
I admit, I am partially inspired by the Food Network Challenges that offer thousands of dollars in rewards. Competing on one of those shows is my fantasy... the way my husband dreams of going on Survivor.

You are so brave. I tried to invent a new way to cook chicken the other night. Suffice to say that the only upside was the realization that our garbage disposal can handle larger quantities of food than we'd thought.
I will SO watch you when you're on the Food Network. I'll even wear a "Ms. Perfect Knows How to Cook!" t-shirt :)
Thank you, Trish! Although my Food Network debut is going to be awhile - it was definitely way to salty and garlic-y!
